چکیده

Research on contact characterization for microelectromechanical system (MEMS) switches has been driven by the necessity to reach a high-reliability level for micro-switch applications. One of the main failures observed during cycling of the devices is the increase of the electrical contact resistance. The key issue is the electromechanical behaviour of the materials used at the contact interface when the current is flowing through the contact asperities. Indeed metal contacting switches have a large and complex set of failure mechanisms driven by the current level. This paper demonstrates the validity of a new methodology using a commercial nanoindenter coupled with electrical measurements on test vehicles specially designed to investigate the micro-scale contact physics. Dedicated validation tests and modeling are performed to assess the introduced methodology by analysing the response of gold contact with 5 μm2 square bumps under various levels of current flowing through contact asperities. Contact temperature rise is measured leading to shifts of the mechanical properties of contact material and modifications of the contact topology. In addition, the data provide a better understanding of micro-contact behaviour related to the impact of current at lowto medium-power levels.

Sensitivity Analysis of Fiber-Reinforced Lamina Micro-Electro-Mechanical Switches with Nonlinear Vibration Using a Higher Order Hamiltonian Approach

In this paper, the nonlinear free vibration of fiber-reinforced lamina micro-switches is investigated, and a sensitivity analysis (SA) is given. The switches are modeled as solid rectangular beams consisting of an isotropic matrix with transversely and longitudinally isotropic reinforcements, incorporating a higher order Hamiltonian approach. An SA of the proposed micro-switch is presented by c...

Robust Lyapunov-based Control of MEMS Optical Switches

In this paper, a robust PID control scheme is proposed for Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS) optical switches. The proposed approach is designed in a way which solves two challenging and important problems. The first one is successful reference tracking and the second is mitigating the system nonlinearities. The overall system composed of nonlinear MEMS dynamics and the PID controller is ...

Design and simulation of a RF MEMS shunt capacitive switch with low actuation voltage, low loss and high isolation

According to contact type, RF MEMS switches are generally classified into two categories: Capacitive switches and Metal-to-Metal ones. The capacitive switches are capable to tolerate a higher frequency range and more power than M-to-M switches. This paper presents a cantilever shunt capacitive RF MEMS switch with characteristics such as low trigger voltage, high capacitive ratio, short switchin...

Study on the Pull-In Instability of Gold Micro-Switches Using Variable Length Scale Parameter

In this paper, the size dependent behavior of the gold micro-switches has been studied. This behavior becomes noticeable for a structure when the characteristic size such as thickness or diameter is close to its internal length-scale parameter. The size dependent effect is insignificant for the high ratio of the characteristic size to the length-scale parameter, which is the case of the silicon...
